Q: Why do we need a retreat for the Space SIG?
A:The Space SIG has always put forward an ambitious lineup of space related projects and initiatives. Additionally, the Space SIG hosts its own track of research at the biennial NSBE Aerospace Systems Conferences. An annual planning meeting is needed order to maintain focus and continue to improve Space SIG operations. This retreat will identify deliverables for Space SIG technical projects, establish goals for the 2013 Space Technology Session, and serve as the first planning meeting for the 2014 NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference.
Q: Is there an official retreat hotel?
A: No. Participants are encouraged to select the hotel of their preference. Las Vegas offers a wide variety of hotels to match your preference. We recommend a hotel on the Las Vegas strip for ease of access. Low cost hotels such as the Stratosphere are available for approximately $40/night. Higher end hotels such as Caesars Palace can run as high as $499/night. The discounted rate of $149/night at the AE Summit Hotel (Green Valley Ranch Resort) is only available starting May 23. Any Las Vegas area hotel is suitable, but you will need transportation to get from your chosen hotel to retreat meeting sites. Search http://hotels.yahoo.com as a starting point, but deals for Las Vegas hotels are plentiful and we encourage you to find a deal suitable to your taste. The low bidder on Yahoo hotels currently is Circus Circus, at $26/night.
Q: Which hotels would your recommend?
A: The most convenient hotel logistically will be the Green Valley Resort. Complimentary transportation is provided between the airport and hotel so it is not necessary to rent a car. However, expect the price to be $144-$180 depending on room choice for the night of the 22 and $149/night the remainder of the retreat. If you are on a budget, the Straosphere or Circus Circus will be better options. It is actually cheaper to stay there and rent a car than to stay at the Green Valley Resort without a car. Other options include the Wynn, Venetian, Luxor, or your choice of Vegas hotels.
Q: Why is the Space Leadership Retreat in the same city as the Alumni Summit?
A: We hope that NSBE Space SIG members will be active members of the Alumni Extension and will participate in NSBE activities beyond simply those of the Space SIG. We used to hold the retreat separately, meeting in September at NSBE World Headquarters in Virginia. However, we realized that we could save our members money if we combine the retreat with another NSBE event, thus eliminating the need to purchase another flight. We are especially fortunate this year because Las Vegas has incredibly low hotel rates. It is possible to attend both the Space Leadership Retreat and the Alumni Summit for less than $100 more than attending the Summit alone.
Q: Are meal costs included in registration?
A: No. All meals are on your own. Registration fees are being used exclusively to pay for meeting materials and retreat logistics.
Q: How can I pay for my hotel and travel?
A: We expect most people will need to pay to attend this retreat by paying for it themselves. This is not a technical conference, so it is not likely that an employer will provide time off work and pay travel and transportation for you to participate in a strategic planning meeting for a nonprofit society, even when the work of that society is relevant to work activity. Feel free to check with your employer, but this should not be considered a given.
Q: If I bring a family member/friend do they need to register for the retreat?
A: Only if they are actively participating in planning sessions or attending the (currently tentative) Bigelow Aerospace tour. Unregistered guests are welcome to join us at meals or social activities.
Q: Why do I have to register separately for the Alumni Summit and Space Leadership Retreat?
A: The two events are organized by different parts of NSBE. The Summit is an event organized by the Alumni Executive Board. The Space Leadership Retreat is organized by the Houston Space Chapter on behalf of the Space SIG. It is logistically simpler for the Alumni Executive Board to use NSBE's IMPak registration system and for the Houston Space Chapter to use its Formstack and Paypal systems.
